Verina Consulting Group, LLC (VERINA) was retained to provide environmental services at a former chemical manufacturing site located in Hackensack, New Jersey. The client, an internationally known specialty chemical manufacturing company selected VERINA to provide turn-key remediation services, including New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) oversight services.
The past activities at the site have resulted in a legacy of complex and varied soils and groundwater impacts requiring remediation within a complicated and challenging geologic setting. In addition, past operations have left an extensive Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) problem that will need to be addressed as part of the integrated remediation approach. Residual contaminants present include chlorinated volatile organic compounds, including PCE, TCE, Carbon Tetrachloride, and resulting breakdown products along with various Freon isomers and semi-volatile organic compounds.
Following bench-scale treatability tests and field-scale pilot studies, VERINA developed a full-scale, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remedy using high; pH activated sodium persulfate to remediate the impacted groundwater.
In addition to design of the groundwater remedy, VERINA providing the client with turn-key implementation services. We have recently completed the third annual phase of a five-year, planned full-scale remedy. To date, a total of 200+ injection wells have been installed in the selected areas for the ISCO implementation. VERINA developed a customized injection trailer to inject the oxidant chemicals in up to 15 wells simultaneously at an injection rate of up to thirty (30) gallons per minute (gpm) while maintaining low injection rate and low pressure at each injection well. VERINA is also providing a range of additional remediation services including active DNAPL recovery, excavation & disposal of impacted soil and vapor mitigation system implementation and operation.
